Johannes Brahms
Quintet for Clarinet and String Quartet in B minor, op. 115
The 33rd season of the Chamber Music Series will end with a piece by Ludwig van Beethoven, whose friendship with Ignaz Schuppanzigh, an Austrian violinist and the leader of the Count Andrey Razumovsky's String Quartet, fits into the overall concept of this season. Schuppanzigh with the Razumovsky Quartet premiered many of Beethoven's string quartets. The Opus 59 featured tonight, written in 1806, was commissioned from Beethoven by Count Razumovsky. It will be played by the Bennewitz Quartet, one of the top international chamber ensembles.
Brahms's Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115 reflects his friendship with the German clarinet prodigy Richard Mühlfeld, who so inspired Brahms that he decided to compose again, despite his decision to end his composing career in 1890 after his Second String Quartet in G major, Op. 111.
