Antonio Vivaldi
The Four Seasons
The friendship between Count Wenzel Morzin, a Czech nobleman of the Morzin family, and Antonio Vivaldi is legendary. Vivaldi was based in Venice, but this Italian composer also maintained contacts with several noblemen from the Czech lands. The most famous of them was Count Wenzel Morzin, owner of the Vrchlabí Estate and Morzin Palace in Prague's Lesser Town, known for his excellent professional orchestra. Vivaldi held the position of the maestro di cappella and served Morzin's ensemble from afar, as was customary in high circles at the time. He dedicated to the Count his most famous work, The Four Seasons, from the cycle Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention), op. 8, which will be heard for the first time at our Chamber Music Series.
